Agave nectar is produced from the Blue Agave plant native to southern Mexico. The syrup (nectar) has a sweet flavor, similar to honey, and is used to sweeten many supplements. However, unlike honey or other sweeteners, agave nectar is low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index measures the insulin load of certain foods. Lower numbers indicate less of an influence on the body's insulin process and production, thus individuals with certain sensitivities to sugar may enjoy agave nectar as an alternative to regular sugar.
